Sound Project: PAPER SOUNDS

As someone who has never recorded a song in my life, this project was extremely daunting to me. Finally, I came up with an idea that resonated with me. As a visual artist who mainly works with physical materials rather than digital, I wanted to find a way to bring a familiar medium into the piece. I was wracking my brain for ideas — splattering paint, squishing clay, or sawing wood. But then it came to me; why not use the most "basic" medium of all? Paper.

The number of sounds I found I could make with paper felt endless, especially the longer I experimented with it. But I narrowed it down to these particular sounds: crinkling, tearing, cutting, drawing (with marker and pen), waving/wiggling a sheet of paper, flipping through pages, flicking, and scraping my fingernails.

I chose to go for an ambient sound for two reasons. One: the idea of creating a song with beat and rhythm was an idea I was holding onto which had been intimidating me and keeping me too scared to work on this project. Two: I wanted this song to emulate the aura of a busy art studio — sounds someone can listen to while creating to feel they that have creative company or inspiration around them.

Even though this project terrified me, I ended up having a lot of fun with it. I'm happy with the finished product!
