Producing Prints & Books with Photo Series "FAKING IT"

My goal with this photo project was to show how humans' relationship with sex is evolving for the worse. We are in the age of free pornography accessible with just a few taps on an iPhone, vibrating sex toys, and dating apps on which someone can schedule sexual relations with another person they've never met. With the help of these new technologies, sex is becoming less relational and more selfish. These technologies are reducing our need for human connections.

I wanted the set for this shoot to be very clean and purposeful. I worked in natural daylight but also clipped my desklamp to a bookshelf behind the camera to add extra brightness. I carefully made sure that the majority of color within these photos would remain within this palette: pink, blue, black, and white. I incorporated a pink silk robe, pink nightie, pink towel, pink nails, navy bedsheets, and black clothing which served as a stark contrast to bright pink and blue sex toys.

I wanted my book to be bold and communicative. To enhance the narrative, I kept the titles of my photos below each image in bold black letters to tie in with the black of my clothing. The cover is fairly simple: a pale pink background to mimic the pink in the photos and a blue font to allude to the blue vibrator used throughout the photos. I titled the book "FAKING IT" as a kind of play on words: faking sex through sex toys and porn, but also to suggest the common phenomenon of women faking orgasms during sexual intercourse.

I am choosing to print the photo attached above as I believe it sums up the story I am telling. I hold a silicon penis and tongue, touching the tips together while making a "kissy face". I'm playing pretend at sex and faking love.
